Ski Business Owners: Which Little Pig Are You?

September 22, 2017 //  by Tracy Beers

The three little pigs can be used as an analogy for many small business owners today.

The English fairy tale The Three Little Pigs was created to teach young children that hard work and dedication pays off. The moral of this story can easily be parlayed into many different areas, but I am going to use it in relation to what I know best – digital marketing for ski shops.

Everyone is familiar with the story

It tells the tale of three little pigs who went out into the world to make their fortunes. The first pig was lazy, utilized the first thing he came across, which was also the cheapest and quickly built his house out of straw. This proved to be unfortunate because his house was the first ruined, and he was eaten by the big bad wolf.

The second little pig was not quite as lazy as the first, but still not as ambitious as he could have been. He chose to make his house out of sticks. A material that took some time to source, and some skill to build with, and a little more money, but still was not sustainable in the long run. Sure enough, soon came along the big bad wolf who huffed and puffed and blew his house down and ate him for dinner too.

Then there was the third little pig. He was the smartest and most ambitious of the three. He went the furthest distance to get his materials, paid the most, and then worked the longest amount of time to carefully construct his house out of bricks. When the big bad wolf came along to his house and tried to blow it down he was unsuccessful. He did not get to eat this little pig because his house was properly built out of sturdy materials.

The three little pigs can be used as an analogy for many small business owners today. Did you build your foundation out of straw?

Ski business owners are not unlike the three little pigs

These days your business website is your first point of contact with consumers and often the main thing that drives consumers to your business. You can’t afford to just have a brick and mortar retail location where you sit and wait for customers to walk in your door. You must have a high quality search engine optimized website that drives traffic to your door. How much time, effort and money did you put into your website? Does your website perform as you had hoped?

Did you throw together a a website on your own just for the sake of having one to try to stay relevant in the world? Or worse yet, get one of your ‘digital savvy shop kids’ to do it? Just because they spend all day on their phones on social media and surfing websites, doesn’t mean they know anything about creating a website.

Or did you hire a professional to build you a site but didn’t retain them to maintain it and keep up-to-date with the changing digital world? I am sure your website looked nice and all when it was first built, but now you are finding out that it quickly became outdated and has little or no search engine optimization.

Or are you like the 3rd little pig, and spent the time, effort and money to build a high quality website and are now sitting back and reaping the rewards?

The three little pigs can be used as an analogy for many small business owners today. Did you build your foundation out of bricks?

So I ask you – which little pig are you?

Are you fed up with your current situation and are ready to “do it right”? Are you ready to spend some time and money on a high quality website that will work for you for long term success? Give me a call to find out how I can help you build a solid digital foundation that will take your business to the next level.
